Speak Your Mind, But Please Be Kind

Today, at least in Western society, it is permitted for anyone to speak their mind. We see it as a right. We see it as normal. But recently, I have come to the conclusion that perhaps that people misunderstood the whole "speak your mind" thing. Back in the day, It was appropriate. It stood for basic rights for women, for slaves, for appropriate politics. However today I think we have taken it too far. Of course this may seem hypocritical, considering that I myself am speaking my mind on a blog. But in my everyday life, and with this outlet, I always think that I must be kind. It’s ok to get your opinion out there, but there is never a reason for it to be vulgar in any shape or form.

People today are vulgar in a multitude of ways; celebrity criticism, believing that politicians have no soul, that it’s not ok to have different beliefs, values, morals, lifestyles. I don’t think this is right. Perhaps if a celebrity stated something extremely out of line about a society, or an issue, I can understand. But when you slander them based on appearance, talent (or lack of)…well I believe you have no right. Sure, I too make comments here and there about the celebs I don’t like, but I don’t make it a huge deal. So what if someone has cellulite? I do too, big deal. And for politicians, sure their decisions may seem far beyond what is right for the majority of society, but they are still human too. And as for beliefs, values, morals, lifestyles, that is what makes this world unique. Why criticize and take that away. We have developed our different cultures for either thousands of years, to even the last few decades. It is what makes visiting and learning each part of the world so fascinating, and what make education and travel so highly desired by so much of the world.

These were only a few issues that I believe have been taken too far. Overall, I think that we have taken advantage of this “right of speak.” We have misunderstood what this represents. It allows us to say what we need to say at times that it needs to be addressed. It was never meant to harm anyone, group, or decision that’s been made. A large majority of us were born with a mouth and the capabilities to use it, but we were also given a brain so that we could watch what we say. In the end, I think the lesson for today is to Speak Your Mind, But Please Be Kind.
